Their shirts shrink on first wash

I bought multiple shirts fully aware that some are cotton and similar to linen. So I washed them in cold water by hand and dried them in the open sun. I thought since these are first washes. Yet they shrunk all over and so much that I cant wear them. Clothes should be pre shrunk or shrink only a little not like 30%. Very disappointed.
